Nilesa was a yeoman board the General Vorkraft, serving chiefly as the ship's cook. While he had a reputation as a bad chef, Cordelia Naismith felt his stew was "wonderful"; he further earned her favor by helping her feed a wounded Ensign Dubauer. He later aided Naismith in overthrowing the Vorkraft mutineers, as well as unwittingly helping her escape.
